Teresia Mathenge attended the BDS training with a hope to gain skills that would mold her to a better entrepreneur. Though her interest was not in entrepreneurship, she realized that she could utilize the idle family land to grow onions.
“I had always thought about starting a business but not in line with agriculture. However, after attending the four days BDS training organized by Aayden Consulting, I gained skills that helped me to turn part of our idle land into an income-generating project. Using Ksh.50,000 that comprised of my savings and a grant from KYEOP, I started onion farming in a half-acre land. My total expenditure for the first season was Ksh.55,000 that included, seeds, labour and pesticides. I harvested four tonnes that I sold at a total of Ksh.160,000 making a net profit of Ksh.105,000 within a period of five months. Good record-keeping skills helped me to track my expenses. My vision is to expand to two acres by 2022 and above five acres thereafter.”
“I started a small workshop after acquiring carpentry skills at a friend’s workshop. However, due to inadequate business management skills, my business was performing poorly for some months. Luckly, through KYEOP project, I got a chance to participate in entrepreneurship training organized by Aayden Consulting limited in 2020. My business skills were sharpened and I got an opportunity to reflect on enhancing my business idea, coming up with better marketing strategy, costing and pricing my products, keeping business records as well as managing business and personal finances. After the training, I was assigned a business coach who visited my business for seven times and guided me on areas to work on to enhance my business performance. My business started growing gradually and by the end of 2020, I was able engage one youth on apprenticeship. Out of the income from the business, am able to cater for the basic needs of the family, pay the trainee a stipend of at least Ksh.6,000 per month and save at least Ksh.3,000 on a bad month. “My Name is Ivy Wambui. I was among the luck beneficiaries to attend a four days BDS training organized by Aayden Consulting in Thika last year (2020). Before the training I had saved Ksh.50, 000 to start a business although I was torn between multiple business ideas. During the training, we were taken through business idea generation and screening process and it’s at this time that I became interested in venturing into poultry farming. Besides, I gained skills in marketing, record keeping, costing among others that gave me confidence to start. After the training, I got a grant of Ksh.40,000 from MSEA which I topped up to my savings and bought 400 layers chicken. Aayden assigned me a coach who would visit my farm in Kandara and give me basic tips on areas to work on. One of the key areas was business records as I was able to keep track of my sales and expenses. On an average, am able to sell 10 trays of egg per day at Ksh.300. My net profit per week from poultry ranges between Ksh.6000 and Ksh.9000. I have developed a great passion in agribusiness over time and I have added four dairy cows to farm. I have employed one youth to support daily activities in the farm. Currently am selling 40 liters of milk per day at Ksh.40 per liter. My vision is to have at least 2000 layers and 20 dairy cows” employing at least 4 youths”
